There is a debate between those who think that the science of food is essential for people and those who believe that schools should focus on teaching more useful subjects. While others claim that learning about food can be overwhelming for students and can distract students from academic studies, I believe that it can be helpful because of several advantages such as healthier lifestyle and independence in cooking.
Spending time by learning about food and cooking can evoke a feeling of tiredness in some students. By adding such extracuricullar activities, students will have limited time for resting, which can be too stressful, especially for kids. As a result, they may study worse because of the large amount of information they get. Moreover, it can be distracting, which can also lead to decline in academic performance. It is due to the fact that, some kids consider cooking as a fun activity. This way of thinking can divert their attention from compulsory subjects to just an elective such as the food science. For instance, many students never tried to cook before, so the food subject can be much more interesting for them than the other subjects. But I believe that these problems can be resolved by some restrictions, and the food science can be seen as useful.
On the other hand, studying about meals and how to prepare them can increase children’s knowledge and can encourage them to consume healthy products. This way, pupils will tend to have a better physical built and maintain a healthy way of living. In addition, those who study how to cook will get independent in cooking. In other words, children will not need to depend on their parents to eat. They will be taught to security rules so that they will not face any accidents in a kitchen. For example, children who know how to cook will not hesitate and make food for themselves, especially when their parents are not at home, resulting in early independence. I totally support this point of view, because I think that it is crucial to be healthy and independent in preparing food.
In conclusion, this essay believes that however the food science can induce stress and distraction in scholars, the understanding about the importance of eco-friendly lifestyle and the self-confidence in cooking are more important.
