The proliferation of technology in recent years has drastically changed how we function. Some people argue that modern technology has improved the connection between people, while others disagree. Both viewpoints will be critically evaluated before a final conclusion is drawn.
On the one hand, there are compelling reasons why the growth of social media can lead to social isolation. First of all, most relationships online are superficial and fleeting with no emotional depth, due to the lack of face-to-face interaction and facial expressions. For example, despite having hundreds, even thousands of friends online, young people still feel lonely and gradually lose emotional connection because they don’t feel truly listened to and understood by others in the Internet. Moreover, many individuals, especially teenagers, spend hours on social media and online entertainment instead of devote time to family and friends. For instance, many adolescents have the habit of using phone during meal, which cause a significant decrease in the number of family conversation and sharing.
On the other hand, the Internet provides new ways for people to communicate and maintain relationships. Nowadays, many chat app such as Zalo or Messenger help people in a long distance can connect easily and conveniently. To illustrate, students living abroad can maintain close relationships with loved one through tools like video conferencing or messaging. Additionally, it has helped people find individuals with shared interests and hobbies, enabling them to build new friendships online.
In summary, I am firmly of the opinion that modern technology plays a crucial role in strengthen human relationships, whereas it can have some downsides and contribute to loneliness. Social media offer valuable tools for connection to help bridge geographical distances and empower introverted people. I believe that when used in balanced way, the Internet will be very beneficial in many ways.
