After retirement, financial responsibility can lie either with individuals themselves or with the government. I’m completely agree with the idea that the government should assist retired old people financially. Because governments must ensure equality for all citizens. However, placing all financial responsibility on retired individuals can increase self-awareness and encourage personal responsibility.
Realising there is no support from the government for people with a lack of income, affects individual in a negative way. They must work harder to prepare for difficult life circumstances after retirement. In addition, this can reduce their dependence on state financial support. All of these negative effects have some consequences. For instance, reducing dependence on state might damage the relationship connection between individuals and the government.
On the other hand, financial support from government ensures equality for each citizen. The majority of the individuals have not high-paid jobs. Therefore, insufficient personal savings can lead to poverty. However, if the government offers financial support to retired people, they might reduce the proportion of poor people. Moreover, after retirement individuals requires more help from the government in many essential areas such as healthcare. For example, retired people require more medical treatment, which means they have to afford higher healthcare costs.
In conclusion, I strongly agree with the idea that governments should provide retired people with financial assistance and help reintegrate them into society. However, I do not completely disagree with the view that individuals should support themselves after retirement. A balanced approach, in which people are encouraged to save during their working lives while governments offer support to those in need, would be the most effective solution.
