As life expectancy increase, the issue of financial support for elderly people has become more important. After retirement, many older adult no longer has a stable income and may depend on other. Some people believe government should take responsibility for supporting retired citizen, while other argue individuals should save money during their working year to pay for their own retirement. This essay will discuss both view before giving my opinion.
On one hand, many people think government should provide financial support for the elderly. First, older people contribute to society through tax and work, so they deserve support in return. It would unfair if they struggle financially after many year of contribution. Second, not everyone earn enough money to save for retirement, especially those with low income. Without government pension, these individual might face poverty in old age. For example, worker in low-paying job may find difficult to save large amount of money. Therefore, state support help ensure a basic standard of living for all elderly citizen.
On other hand, other believe individuals should responsible for their own retirement saving. First, rely too much on government may create financial pressure on national budget. Second, if people save during their working year, they can enjoy greater independence and financial secure later in life. Third, personal saving plan encourage responsibility and long-term planning. In my opinion, while individuals should try save money for retirement, government should still provide basic support to protect those who cannot save enough.
In conclusion, both government support and personal saving play important role in retirement planning. I believe a balance approach is the most practical solution.
