Band 6+: Some people believe that the increasing use of technology in communication has a negative impact on social relationships, while others think it helps people connect more effectively. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the advent of Digitalization and the spread of Internet, the way of communication with friends and relatives has certainly evolved and, as any change, advantages and drawbacks can be found.

The opinion of a portion of the population is that the new technologies have a negative effect on social interactions. This can be thought because one might prefer staying by themselves, surfing on the Net, rather than hanging out with their colleagues, classmates or other people that they know; a possible cause is that there is a consistent amount of accessible and enjoyable content online, that might be wrongly perceived as a good substitute of social relationships. Additionally, this behaviour may make communication with others quite challenging, when they are face to face.

On the other hand, phones and applications like Telegram and Whatsapp have made people more connected to each other; in fact, you can send or reply to a message easily, anytime and anywhere. In addition, thanks to social media such as Instagram and BeReal, one can share their experiences and interact with people that they don’t even know, giving the opportunity to make new relationships.

Personally, I am on the side of the ones that see the big improvements of the new communication systems, since I think that the positive aspects have a greater weight that the negative ones.

Event though my opinion agrees with the ideas described in the third paragraph, I’ve to admit that both perspectives are valid. As always, people should try enhancing their situation by taking advantage of what is good and, at the same time, keeping distance from the negativities of a particular thing, which is, in this case, the effect of the modern technology on daily lives.
