Band 9: Some people believe that the Olympics games help bring people from different nations together, while others claim that holding the Olympics waste money which could be used for important issues. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The Olympic Games have long been celebrated as a global event that fosters unity among nations. However, critics argue that hosting the Olympics represents an unnecessary financial burden, with funds better allocated to pressing societal issues. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, proponents of the Olympics emphasize their ability to promote international harmony. The Games provide a platform where athletes from diverse cultural and political backgrounds compete peacefully, showcasing values like teamwork, sportsmanship, and mutual respect. For example, the Olympics often include symbolic moments, such as the Parade of Nations, which highlight global diversity while fostering a shared sense of humanity. Additionally, the event facilitates cultural exchange, as spectators and athletes interact, learn about each other’s traditions, and build mutual understanding. For many, this represents a powerful counter to rising nationalism and political tensions, making the Olympics a beacon of global unity.

On the other hand, critics contend that hosting the Olympics entails immense financial costs that often outweigh the benefits. Constructing state-of-the-art facilities, upgrading infrastructure, and organizing large-scale events require billions of dollars, often leaving host countries in debt. For instance, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics left Brazil struggling with underutilized stadiums and significant economic challenges. These critics argue that such resources could instead be directed toward pressing issues like healthcare, education, or poverty alleviation, which have a more direct and lasting impact on citizens’ lives. Moreover, the short-term economic boost from tourism and media attention is often insufficient to justify the long-term financial strain.

In my opinion, while the economic concerns are valid, the symbolic and cultural significance of the Olympics should not be overlooked. Hosting the Games does pose challenges, but careful planning and sustainable investment can mitigate financial risks. For example, cities can reuse existing facilities or repurpose Olympic infrastructure for community use post-event. Furthermore, the Olympics provide an opportunity to inspire unity and hope in a world often divided by conflict and inequality. These intangible benefits, though difficult to quantify, are invaluable in fostering a more connected and harmonious global society.

In conclusion, the Olympic Games are both a unifying force and a financial challenge. While hosting the event requires substantial investment, its role in bringing people together on an international scale is undeniable. With proper management, the Games can strike a balance between economic responsibility and the promotion of global unity.
