Some people claim that disclosing the private data of offenders publicly is an effective way method to reduce crime rates .However , there is a more persuasive argument that the information should be remain confidential , as it can protect criminals from discrimination .
On the one hand, announcing the personal information of lawbreakers can reduce unlawful acts . In fact , most criminals are dangerous and unsafe for society ,thus making the figures public can help people to identify and avoid them. In addition , if they commit a crime, witnesses are more likely to call the police quickly and the police officers easily find and trace thanks to these testimonies . Besides , publicizing raises people’s awareness of the law , and makes them hesitate to break the law, thereby reducing criminals in the community. For instance ,in Thailand , after the government regularly publicizing the identities and crimes of dangerous offenders , the crime rate in the country decreased markedly between 2010 and 2015,thanks to increasing public awareness of law enforcement.
On the other hand , we should protect this information , as it can prevent social prejudice against lawbreakers and their families . People typically tend to avoid the relatives and family of convicted persons , though they are actually innocent , this puts significant pressure on them . Research indicates that some parents of offenders commit suicide due to this strain and mental health caused by community . Moreover , this protection can facilitate their rehabilitation after serving their sentences , which definitely has a positive effect on society .
In conclusion, while it is apparent that publicizing offenders’ data is a good way to reduce crime cases , I believe that concealing the details is a better solution to prevent prejudice against criminals and their family members.
