It is a common belief that violent criminals’ personal details should be disclosed to the public. However, I firmly believe this should not be implemented because it exacerbates violent crime issues.
On the one hand, some individuals believe that the government should disclose violent criminals’ personal information to ensure people who live in the same community are safe. This can effectively help people form strategies to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. For instance, in China, in order to prevent criminals re-offend similar case, sexual offenders’ personal details, including name, age and address would be published online for people who live in same neighbourhood to get prepared. The Chinese government believe that “acting is better than reacting”, meaning that the fast responses lead to increased overall safety. Under this context, the violation of criminals’ privacy is justified.
Nevertheless, I strongly believe that this measure is undoubtedly unfair to previous offenders, and brings negative impacts to society. Firstly, this is a violation of human rights, as criminals deserve the chance to correct themselves and become a good citizen after they have finished their sentence. However, once their personal details are released, they will face immense public pressure and discrimination, which makes it harderfor them to reintegrate into society. For example, nowadays many companies will do background checks for their candidates. Many companies will reject a job seeker’ s application if the candidate has any criminal history. As a result, previous offenders find it hard to get a job and a stable income, which leads them to commit crime to survive. Therefore, this measure will lead to increased crime rates.
In conclusion, although releasing criminals’ information can improve security to some certain levels, this implementation will bring disastrous results in terms of crime.
