Band 8+: Some people believe that the use of social media has a positive impact on individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is no doubt that the influence of social platforms has become a topic of considerable debate. I strongly agree with this statement as it has a detrimental impact on both personal well-being and the wider community.

To begin with, social media websites have harmful effects on individual users. This is because excessive use can lead to addiction, reduced face-to-face interaction, and even mental health issues. In other words, when people spend long hours surfing the internet, they put themselves at high risk of developing internet-related illnesses. For instance, Egypt suffers from a high percentage of young people who experience anxiety and depression linked to social media overuse. Consequently, those juveniles find it difficult to focus on real-life relationships and daily responsibilities.

In addition, social media services can severely impact society because they may serve as tools to spread misinformation and online harassment. As a result, they can damage public trust and create divisions within communities. For example, Japan has a high percentage of people exposed to fake news and cyberbullying on social media networks, which leads to increased polarization and a decline in social cohesion. Hence, it can be said that the repercussions of these virtual services cannot only alter the mindset and personality of young people but can also greatly affect public opinions and bonds.

In conclusion, although the emergence of online platforms that facilitate communication among people is believed to be beneficial, I firmly contend that it has several drawbacks, not only for individuals but also for nations. In the years to come, it is hoped that the governments will launch a comprehensive, large-scale campaign to increase public awareness of this matter.
