There are different opinions on whether universities should provide students with practical skills needed for their future jobs or academic knowledge. In my opinion, broad academic knowledge is more important and should take the most hours in universities.
On the one hand, practical skills are indeed very helpful and students will benefit when they finish their degree. If you have been preparing for the problems that employees are usually tasked with, it will be much easier to find a job after graduation. This allows people to get a stable income quickly which is also very helpful for the economy of the country they live in. That is why it can be important to get skills that students will need for future employment.
On the other hand, we can find some downsides of spending the most time on teaching practical skills. The world constantly changes and we are supposed to adapt. Some problems that used to require several employees in the past are now simply automated and do not require any. So the challenge could be to create something that will reduce manual labor. There are many examples when jobs just disappeared after some kind of a machine was introduced. Teaching in an academic way prepares students for these kinds of changes by giving fundamental knowledge that will always be relevant.
To conclude, it may seem useful to focus on practical skills, but sometimes it only works short-term. Students should be taught fundamental discipline, so they can adapt if their skills are no longer applicable.
