There’s an ongoing debate states that, universities should mainly focus on making students ready for employment. Others believe that universities should supply knowledge for their own sake, regardless if it is going to be useful or not. In this essay i will explain both of these ideas and give me on opinion about how universities should focus on preparing for employment phase, instead of teaching non-useful knowledge.
On one hand, it is very important for universities for choosing certain courses in order to make students ready for employment. Most of the students prefer to attend a university for getting a good career. If the universities can’t satisfy their request, it will be meaningless for them and they will think that they are wasting their time there. Furthermore, if students spend their time with courses that they are not interested nor related, after graduation stepping to the employment world will be much tougher for them. One solution can be for them is to take a gap year and it is also a type of wasting time for them. According to Times journal, students who does not take specific courses in their university phase tend to have difficulties in their later life.
On the other hand, university is not a specific place for a student to get a job accordingly. University is a general place that can teach you little bit of everything in order to have some ideas about specific topics in later life. But it does not mean they should focus on too specific courses. If a student really wants to be successful in employment environment, they should not satisfy them with university borderline. Things like self-study can be a good option for them to be ready for their career life. A recent survey from UK government shows that students who does self-study and also doing universities courses at the same time can be more intellectually developed than the those who don’t.
In my opinion, I think universities should focus more on teaching specific subjects related to the majors they have. If a student choose a specific major, it probably means that they want to get a job related to that major. Moreover, they shouldn’t waste their time with unnecessary subjects that is not for them.
At the end, universities should focus on more about specific subject related to the majors rather than teaching students more general topics. With this way, students can be more ready to the later phase of their life, especially their career moments.
