Band 8+: Some people believe that universities should focus only on academic subjects, while others think they should also teach practical skills such as communication and teamwork. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people argue that universities should mainly prepare students with practical skills for their future careers, while others believe that academic knowledge should be the priority. Although both approaches have their own benefits, I believe that universities should provide a balance between theoretical understanding and practical abilities.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why practical skills are considered important in higher education. First, many graduates struggle to find employment because they lack experience in applying their knowledge to real situations. For example, a business student may understand marketing theories but still have difficulty creating an effective marketing plan without practical training. Therefore, courses that include internships, projects and workplace experience can help students become more confident and better prepared for their careers.

On the other hand, academic knowledge remains an essential part of university education. A strong theoretical foundation allows students to understand the reasons behind different processes rather than simply following instructions. For instance, engineers need to understand scientific principles before they can design safe and effective products. Without sufficient academic knowledge, practical skills alone may only provide short-term benefits.

In my view, the most effective university system is one that combines both elements. While practical training helps students adapt to the workplace, academic knowledge enables them to continue learning and solve complex problems in the long term. Universities should therefore design programmes that allow students to gain theoretical understanding while also giving them opportunities to apply what they have learned.

In conclusion, practical skills and academic knowledge are both valuable in university education. Instead of choosing one over the other, institutions should aim to develop students who possess both the knowledge and abilities required for future success.
