Band 6+: Some people believe that universities should only accept students with the highest marks, while others believe that students of all ages and abilities should be allowed to attend. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are individuals who think that universities should allow only students with good grades, while others believe that students of any ability and age should be allowed to attend. In this essay I will examine both views and explain why I think students of all age groups and abilities should have permission to enter.

It is well known that universities most of the time prioritize academic excellence when selecting applicants. It is due to the fact that this approach provides environment where students have to compete with each other in order to attend to A-class universities which is also increases their motivation. For instance, if there is no rigorous admission criteria, students would not have any stimulation to have good grades and to achieve academic credentials. Supporters of this view also claim that merit-based selection allows universities to focus on promising students more, therefore exclude expense on students with less academic credentials. It takes a lot of time and resources for universities to raise a valuable student that will potentially be helpful to society.

On the other hand, this approach creates educational inequality. People who are less fortunate and with difficult background do not have opportunity to hire private teachers to get highest marks in order to enter a good university. Another reason to give opportunity to study for all students regardless of their age and abilities is that it creates diversity. There are researches that suggests that diversity generates space for creativity. Different and new ideas can come from non-traditional students with diverse backgrounds.

In conclusion, even though academic credentials are important for students, they are not the only indicator of ability. People of all ages and academic excellence should have opportunity to basic right lake study.
