While some people have an opinion that university students should solely focus on their subject of study, others think that students should be required to complete modules in other subjects of their interest. I believe that students must explore study subjects out of their domain.
When students focus entirely on the subject they have chosen, they direct all academic credits towards their main subject. This would allow them to develop deep knowledge in their subject. It can also greatly help students when they apply for higher education. For example, an admission committee evaluating a student’s fit for their master’s program in Physics will give great importance to the number of academic credits a student has completed pertaining to Physics in his or her undergraduate studies. Students who focused on their main subject can gain an edge in this regard.
However, making university students explore subjects outside their main field of study can be very beneficial. It allows students to develop interdisciplinary skills that will help them build a career at the intersection of many fields. For instance, a student studying Physics with a developing interest in data analysis will find the important role of data analysis in astronomy very intriguing. Within such a field, students with a Physics background can have a more intuitive approach in considering aspects that data science students may have missed.
While delving into their main subject can help students explore the depths of it, choosing modules from other domains allows them to develop a breadth which can positively impact their career, by opening up interdisciplinary avenues. In a future where multiple domains have to come together to develop new technologies, such as quantum computing, gaining exposure to many subjects is very important.
