It’s believed by majority of people that when young generation perpetrate serious offences ought to be penalized as adult offenders. I completely disagree with this view because it can directly affect physical and emotional well-being, also when adolescent sent to prison, they can become more hardened criminals. Therefore, I believe that helping them reintegrate into society is more effective way.
Perhaps the most significant harm of punishing youth in the same way as adults is the emotional and physical trauma. By taking legal actions against youth who commit serious crimes, the justice system may harm their emotions. Consequently, this not only leads to depression, and form health relationships, but also severe injuries from violence in adult prisons. In prisons there will be different kind of offenders such as murders or thieves, who can attack them unexpectedly or intentionally.
Moreover, after being prisoned and will be likely to commit more harsh crimes. During the prisoning time they are emotionally damaged and after being released they do not want to get a knowledge or have an ambition to work and earn a legitimate income. In that case, they commit even serious crimes than before. Instead of harming their emotions and physical health, or placing them in adult prisons, which usually turn them more hardened criminals, rehabilitation programs for youth who commit crime have proven mor effective, because rehabilitation teaches responsibility, empathy, and decision -making skills. Moreover, with this program young people learn why crime is harmful to themselves and society.
To sum up, young people are not mentally ready to spend their most important and happy years in prisons, instead they have to be taught why crimes are bad and have a negative impact on their development and their role in society. Therefore, rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in adolescent life who commit serious crimes.
