Tourism has become increasingly popular nowadays, with people exploring their dream destinations in different countries. Although some people might argue that travelling has a positive impact on both people and the environment, I agree with the idea that tourism tends to have negative impacts on local communities at the social and environmental level.
On the one hand, it could be said that tourism has brought significant development to rural areas which economy is based on offering leisure activities for tourists. If people are highly interested in visiting a place, the transportation system might be improved in order to accommodate people’s needs. Thus, bringing progress to the local people as well. Additionally, as long as tourists visit a place, locals will benefit economically. Tourism might foster economic development in rural areas creating jobs and opportunities for locals.
On the other hand, some could argue that heavy travel patterns disrupt native populations. Large incoming flows of people visiting a place could translate into irreparable environmental damage. Exploitation of natural resources could be led by a high demand. I highly agree with this view since tourism often prioritizes revenue over sustainability, environmental destruction is justified by economic development. Unless people become more conscious of their environmental impact when travelling, natural areas will be destroyed.
To conclude, tourism might bring economic development, such as a stronger public transportation system, to rural areas as a result of travellers’ expenditure. However, this view overlooks the environmental impact on native areas. In my opinion, irresponsible tourism tends to damage native areas rather than fostering development.
