Films can exert a profound influence on the public consciousness. While some argue that movies should serve purely as a source of entertainment, others contend that they ought to possess inherent educational value. In my view, while the leisure aspect is undeniable, films should prioritize a greater purpose because audiovisual media is one of the most effective tools for social education.
On the one hand, the primary appeal of cinema lies in its ability to entertain. Historically, movies were designed to provide the masses with a brief reprieve from the rigors of daily life. For instance, many viewers gravitate toward romantic comedies or action films to temporarily escape personal responsibilities and emotional stress. Furthermore, visiting the cinema is widely regarded as a social activity to be enjoyed with friends and family. In such contexts, individuals are typically seeking relaxation rather than intellectual stimulation or “food for thought.”
On the other hand, films significantly shape how people perceive the world around them. Since cinema is not always restricted to fiction, many productions are based on real-world experiences that offer profound insights into the lives of others. A prime example is the Indian film Taare Zameen Par, which was among the first to poignantly address the challenges of dyslexia. By highlighting how this condition affects a child’s daily routine, the film successfully raised awareness through a narrative based on genuine human experiences. Moreover, because the younger generation is highly attuned to digital media, high-quality cinematic content can be a powerful instrument for shaping their values and expanding their knowledge base.
In my opinion, if the film industry focused more on scripts that tackle contemporary social issues, it could become a primary vehicle for public enlightenment. Because audiovisual storytelling is the most widely consumed form of media, its strategic use can challenge prejudices and shift perspectives more effectively than traditional textbooks.
To conclude, while films will always be a source of amusement, their potential to convey meaningful messages to society should not be overlooked. Although the initial draw for many is entertainment, I believe that cinema fulfills its highest potential when it serves a purpose beyond mere diversion.
