People sometimes believe that cities should give some space to self-expression through graffiti, while there are those who think that graffiti should be prohibited. Even though people should have freedom to express their imagination, in my opinion, there should be some prohibitions for graffiti.
Admittedly, people have rights to freedom by birth and are willing to have space for expressing imagination. Some people prefer and choose graffiti for self-expression because they are looking for attention and recognition. Graffiti also helps to raise citizens’ creativity, encourages self-expression and raises the young generation in freedom. However, as history thought, letting people do what they want does not always have positive outcomes, but has harmful, destroying outcomes. Thus, the cities’ administration has to create requirements and measures that citizens should follow.
On the other hand, if graffiti is not banned and uncontrolled it may have negative consequences for cities and citizens. Damaging buildings will make cities less attractive to tourists, because they will lose their identity while graffiti changes and damages the initial architecture and its history. All these consequences will affect not the cities’ past, but also the economic side and future development. In addition graffiti will be used for vandalism like writing curse words which may be harmful and have a destructive effect on the younger generation.
In conclusion, humans have indisputable rights for creating, expressing their imagination even through graffiti. However in my opinion there should be some requirements and measures from authorities which will regulate graffiti in cities. I believe it is necessary to save cities’ history, identity and attractiveness for tourists.
