There is a view that celebrities should not be sharing contents revealing how they live or what they do regularly on social media. This is mainly advised regarding celebrities’ safety reasons. However, I believe the benefits of being open to the public – transparency and enhanced fan engagement – are more significant than potential dangers.
Making contents about how they live on social media, celebrities are highly likely to be victims of particular crimes. Fraud, stalking and cybercrime are notable examples here. Public figures, in the case of sharing their private information, can periodically face such cybercrime cases since the internet is a potential venue for those trying to earn illicitly. Through identifying personal information, such as superstars’ residences, interests and family, cybercriminals easily become capable of earning money at the expense of intimidating those with household names.
Despite this, frequent public exposure by notable figures in the community can benefit them in terms of enhanced fan engagement. Evidently, there is always a boundary when someone wants to meet a public star in person as they are not always personally open to communal meetings, or someone really cannot afford to meet with them. Therefore, social media remains the only place where public figures mostly engage with fans and even talk by going live on platforms like Instagram or Facebook. This not only benefits the fans as they are getting in touch with their idols but also the celebrities concerning an enhanced fan base.
Moreover, public shares are vitally important in terms of transparency and authenticity of the information spreading about celebrities. No matter what misleading information turns up on social media about famed individuals, fans look forward to hearing from those prominent figures only without trusting any source of news. This serves to the advantage of celebrities which enables them to avoid any misinterpretation about their lives, enhancing the confidence of the public.
In conclusion, frequent exposure to social media tends to lead to potential fraud on the internet for famed individuals. However, with the benefits they are gaining through improved fan engagement and transparency, celebrities can take advantage of social media regardless of any feasible drawback.
