Education is an important part of life. However, people have different opinions on what makes a person successful in school. Some believe that the most important thing in student achievement is a good teacher and others argue that it is the students’ mindset that counts most. In this essay I will examine both sides before stating my own opinion.
On one hand, effective educators have a huge impact on students’ learning. They know how to make complicated subjects simple and fun, and inspire students to give their best. Experienced teachers can tell where the students are lacking and help them to improve. A good teacher can help students gain self-esteem and achieve better examination results. Therefore, educators have a great influence on academic success.
On the other hand, the students’ perspectives are as, if not more, important. No matter how skilled a teacher is, he/she cannot assist students who do not want to learn or do not try in their studies. While driven students tend to get their work done, check their work frequently, and ask for clarification when they are confused. This means they are more likely to succeed, even with less than the best teachers. I think both the teacher and the student are responsible for academic success. However, I believe that students’ mindsets have a greater impact, because success is largely determined by a willingness to work hard and learn from one’s mistakes.
To conclude, good teachers provide good guidance and support for students, but students’ motivation, determination and positive attitude are the most important factors to educational success.
