The employment of animals has always been a controversial topic. While some believe that it is not problematic to use animals for the benefits of human beings, others believe that it is not ethical. There are valid opinions on both sides, which will be discussed in this essay.
People opposed to the usage of animals, highlight its cruelty and brutality. For example, by conducting experiments on rats or mice, we are deliberately neglecting the dire consequences that might occur as we are prioritizing human safety. Thus, no matter what happens to the animal, whether it is mortality or suffering from a severe illness, we just have the lust to have our mundane life. Furthermore, the opposers cite that animals probably suffer physically and mentally when kept in captivity, even if their surroundings are spacious and similar to their natural habitat. The symptoms may range from depression to eating disorder, and repetitive behavior.
Conversely, those who support the idea note that the life expectancy of animals is mostly shorter than humans which means by risking their lives, the unforeseen circumstance would not be as disastrous as if the experiment was done on a person. They add that in many cases, animals’ brains are not as developed and advanced as people. This means that not only do they not comprehend the loss of their siblings or parents but also they do not feel that they have been employed for a project.
To conclude, I feel that animals can provide numerous opportunities in order to serve science and also to prevent mankind from deterioration. This outweighs the negatives as long as the experiments are done on sick animals.
