In today’s digital age, fake news has increased significantly and can be spread swiftly due to the rise of social media platforms. While some individuals argue the establishment of legal measures against false information. On the other hand, others believe that despite its harmful effects, fake news is part of free speech, which should be protected and preserved.
Those in favor of criminalizing fake news highlight the impact it has on society and how it can confuse people. Indeed, individuals use inaccurate news in order to manipulate people or to create chaos. For instance it can mislead voters during an election or even jeopardize the health sector as seen during covid-19. Wherefore laws against this could secure society from misinformation.
Nevertheless, some people are convinced that criminalizing fake news restricts free speech. Thus, any attempt to limit speech, even if it is unfounded, can infringe on fundamental human rights. Therefore making fake news illegal could create a disagreeable environment, where people are afraid to share their views for fear of legal repercussions or oppressive public discourse and open debate.
Notwithstanding the detrimental effects of fake news, I believe we could settle for a more reasonable approach by inviting every social media platform to improve their settings in order to banish disturbing accounts and restrict the divulgation of untruthful knowledge. Moreover by raising awareness in pedagogy institutions we can educate children and teenagers about the hazard of false information and the importance of expressing ourselves by giving our opinion.
To conclude, even though fake news is seen as a threat to society, it would also menace free speech. As a consequence, a balanced solution including education and responsible policies on media platforms can assist to combat negative aspects while preserving the right of freedom of expression.
