Should false allegations be made illegal? Although some people would say that people have the right to express and talk freely on the Internet, others would say that fake news is actually a threat to the public and should definitely be made illegal. In my opinion, false allegations on the web should be punished by the law because they represent a menace to society.
To begin with, false allegations ,whether it is on social media or in real life, concerning a political issue can cause a lot of chaos between the different political parties in society. Also, it can create a lot of confusion. In fact, it is known that politics play a major role in our everyday life. For instance, if a fake story spreads online saying that a politician was involved in a corruption scandal, it can quickly create confusion and distrust among voters. Furthermore, it can increase tension between political parties, and lead to conflicts in the community. But politics is not the only field impacted by fake news.
In fact, some fake news that is published about well-known people, whether it was intentional or not, can sometimes ruin their career. Indeed, people, especially haters, want to spread fake rumors for clout or to see the person they hate fall at their lowest. For example, a fabricated story claiming an actor was involved in illegal activities could lead to public outrage and significant damage to their reputation.
However, fake news can be a form of self-expression even though it may include false information.In fact, many redactors can express their opinion and talk freely about anything. Anyone can have free speech about any topic they wish. As a result, making fake news illegal leads to a privation of the freedom of speech.
To conclude, I believe that fake news should be punished by the law to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding, as well as to eliminate unnecessary conflicts and tensions caused by misleading rumors.
