In recent years, people have been trying to define success in many ways, whether it be through one’s financial state or one’s social contributions. In this essay, I will explore both perspectives before getting to my opinion on this matter.
On the one hand, it is understandable that wealth is considered the symbol of achievement. It is often the tangible evidence of one’s hard work and educated financial actions. People imagine there being the “ladder of success”, with each dollar earned representing one step higher.Another point in support of this notion is that money also provides people with “material comfort”. Having sustainable income insures basic needs, comfortable living, and overall provides a peace of mind, knowing that one can cover essential expenses. Ones working in the business territory exemplify this well, as their fortune comes from innovative ideas, risky-assessed investments, and the ability to create value in the marketplace.
On the other hand, there are also the heroes who don’t wear capes, with contributions to society redefining success beyond any wealth. There are scientists with research and discoveries that advance humanization, with breakthroughs in environment, medicine or technology. Most well-known scientists whose inventions and discoveries still influence science today, with Marie Curie and her radioactive work, or Thomas Edison and his breakthrough on the use of electricity, specifically the light bulb. There are also teachers who shape future generations, as their impacts extend far beyond the small classroom. Dedicated teachers leave their marks on countless students, influencing many generations. Then there are artists, musicians and writers, who enriched our lives with their creativity. From Shakespeare to Picasso, they are responsible for shaping culture, provoking thoughts and emotions. We owe these individuals our deepest gratitude, as their efforts have left lasting remarks that shape not only the present but the future as well.
Wealth can provide comfort, security and a peace of mind, but purposeful contributions give life meaning, whether through teaching, scientific breakthroughs or artistic emotions. Ultimately however, it is up to ourselves to define what success really is. Whether it be through finance or impact, it is the choices and how we face them matters the most.
In conclusion, some think success is based on wealth, while others believe contributions are what matter more . And in my opinion, success is subjective and depends solely on how one sees it.
