There are varying views exist in predicting one’s choice of their clothing in relation to their cultural identity and personal character. Several sociologists believe that there is a link between these two factors. Others do not believe in judging somebody based on their clothes. In this essay, the merits and demerits of both of these views are discussed before a conclusion is arrived at.
On the one hand, clothes have a great significance in identifying in cultural identity of a person. For example, Arab female wears a traditional veiled dress representing their culture. Moreover, people from a region or country has traditional greeting or behavioral pattern. These special dresses has developed due to climatic or geographical situation of that region over the course of thousands of years. Further, it has significantly edified their character as well. Thus it is unwise to ignore the pattern of ones dress and their cultural and personal trait associated with it.
On the other hand, it is half of the story. The axiom goes ‘first impression is the best impression’. It may not hold true in all circumstances. For instance, a person comes for an interview with great impression might turn out to be a failure when tested with real life situation. Therefore, we must not jump into conclusion about an individual based on appearance alone.
After having analysed various facets of this topic, It can be stated that people attire could have been evolved over the years from their geographical or various other factors, one must not premeditate someone’s character solely based on their clothing habits. Premeditated perception based on one’s clothing is not the hallmark of a modern society because most of the time it may be biased and does not capture a true picture.
