In this modern age, fashion has transcended mere daily attire, evolving into a powerful tool for self-expression. Given this reason, many hold the view that the culture and personalities of each individual can be revealed entirely from their clothing choice. While clothes can offer some insights, I believe it’s not always a reliable indicator.
It is true that clothes are a wonderful tool for predicting character and culture. To begin with, traditional costumes can help identify people from different countries. For clothing of each country has its unique and symbolic designs, colours and patterns, when the natives wear their folk costumes, others can instantly identify their background. For instance, Vietnamese people have Ao dai, whereas those who come from Japan wear kimono. Additionally, one’s choice of clothes often reflects their mood and personality. Wanting to express themselves and their emotion to people around them, fashion lovers have a wide range of options to choose from. Bright colours can signal happiness or energy, while black often conveys grief or seriousness.
Nevertheless, I would argue that the characteristics of a person are impossible to identify from clothing choices for major reasons. The first reason to be given is that people from many places tend to follow fashion trends instead of a consistent style. For example, the trend for 2023 was playful and bold clothes from the 1990s and 2000s era, whereas the beginning of 2024 marks the rise of Coquette Core, which is a softer, feminine aesthetic. Consequently, it might be challenging to tell their native country simply based on what they wear. Moreover, those who have financial instability tend to inherit passed-down clothes from family members. Therefore, they might have to wear clothing which does not reflect their character traits.
In conclusion, while I agree a person’s background and characteristics can be assumed through their own choices of fashion, I am of the opinion that focusing solely on clothing can limit our perception. Trends and financial status can influence what someone wears, making it an unreliable indicator of their true selves.
