Band 8+: Some people say that its better to teach language students in small class, whereas others think the number of peole does not matter. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that language learners need small classes to succeed, whereas others argue that class size is unimportant. I believe smaller classes generally provide better conditions for language learning, although effective teaching can partly compensate when large groups are unavoidable.

The main advantage of a small class is that each learner has more opportunity to use the language. Speaking ability develops through repeated practice, yet in a class of forty students an individual may speak only briefly during a lesson. With fewer learners, teachers can organise discussions more easily, monitor pronunciation and give specific feedback on recurring errors. Students may also feel more accountable because it is harder to remain passive when everyone is expected to participate. These factors can accelerate progress, particularly at lower and intermediate levels where regular correction is valuable.

However, class size alone does not determine success. A poorly organised small class may still produce little learning, while a skilled teacher can use pair work, group tasks and digital platforms to involve students in a larger class. Highly motivated learners can also make substantial progress through independent reading, listening and practice outside school. Nevertheless, these strategies reduce rather than eliminate the disadvantages of large groups. Teachers still have less time to diagnose individual weaknesses, and meaningful speaking time remains limited.

For this reason, I regard class size as an important factor but not the only one. Schools should keep language classes reasonably small where resources permit, while also investing in teacher quality and opportunities for independent practice.

In conclusion, small classes are generally more conducive to language learning because they increase participation and personalised feedback, but good teaching and learner motivation remain essential to success.
