Band 7+: Some people say that parents should place restrictions on the hours their children spend watching TV and playing computer games, and encourage them to spend this time reading books instead. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s digital age, where everything is accessible online, many people are increasingly spending longer periods on the internet. This influence can have both positive and negative effects, depending on individual interests and how time is spent – whether it’s playing games, watching movies on mobile devices or TV, or engaging in other online activities. Some argue that parents should monitor their children’s online activities and encourage them to read books instead, which can be beneficial. I agree with the notion that parents should limit their child’s online activity and promote reading books.

Many young people are attracted to online platforms like video games, such as PUBG, and social media, often spending excessive amounts of time on these platforms. This can lead to neglect of academic studies and a decline in exam scores. Therefore, some suggest that parents should restrict their children’s access to these platforms and encourage reading books instead. Reading can enhance knowledge and concentration, crucial for future job opportunities. By gaining expertise in their field of interest, they can improve their chances of success. Additionally, reading comic books and novels can enhance imaginative skills and serve as valuable sources of knowledge, improving their understanding and critical thinking. Parents should support their children by motivating them to read books, promoting personal growth and academic success.

However, imposing restrictions on children’s activities and prioritizing reading over gaming or socializing online can sometimes evoke negative reactions. Children may develop resentment towards their parents or make poor choices. Although they may not comprehend the reasons for these restrictions at a young age, realizing it later may come too late. Moreover, prolonged online activities can strain eyes and contribute to negative behavior, especially in the context of multiplayer games. Understanding the benefits of reading can enhance academic performance in the long run.

In conclusion, the debate on children’s screen time and parental influence is complex. While online platforms offer both opportunities and challenges for young people, striking a balance is key. Encouraging children to engage in activities like reading books alongside their online engagements can promote holistic development. Excessive screen time can lead to neglect of academics and negative behavior, while overly strict regulations may breed resentment and strain family relationships. Therefore, a balanced approach that includes reasonable screen time restrictions and encouragement to explore diverse activities such as reading is crucial. Creating a supportive environment that values both online interaction and traditional learning methods enables parents to guide their children through the intricacies of the digital age, fostering academic success and personal growth.
