Band 6+: Some people say that supermarkets and manufacturers have a responsibility to reduce the amount of packaging on products they sell. Others believe that it is the consumer's responsibility to avoid buying products which have a lot of packaging. Discuss both views and give your opinions.

These days the topic of saving ecology and recycling wastes has become extremely popular. Some people believe that supermarkets and factories are responsible for reducing the number of packaging, while others suppose that it is the consumer’s authority to shun the products which have a lot of packaging. In my view, it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to reduce the amount of wrapping of the products.

On the one hand, producers can change the materials of the packaging or reduce its amount in order to be eco-friendly. Nowadays a lot of supermarkets have enormous quantities with plastic packaging, thus destroying the ecology. Consumers are forced to purchase these products due to the fact that they sometimes do not have other options or replacement. There are a lot of substitutions for packages, for instance paper or recycled cardboard. Moreover, manufacturers should recycle the wrapping, including plastic bags and boxes for products, hence helping the environment to stay clean.

On the other hand, customers can influence producers by not purchasing goods with huge packaging. When people have high awareness of plastic waste, it can hugely affect manufacturers. Consumers can buy products with paper or eco-friendly wrapping, and avoid packages made of big amounts of plastic. These movements can pressure manufacturers not to increase environmental pollution and change the materials of packaging or decrease its amount, in order to satisfy clients, hence save the planet.

To conclude, while some people argue that consumers are responsible for avoiding goods with ecology-destroying packaging, as they can pressure producers by not buying it, I am convinced that it is the producer’s power to make eco-friendly wrapping for products, since they should keep the planet healthy.
