What is the Internet? Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. There is a group of people who think that the Internet has more harm than benefit. However, in my opinion, although there are certain downsides, the disadvantages have not outweigh the advantages yet and in this essay we will discuss both views of this controversial problem.
On the one hand, on the Internet, it’s easy to lose track of time and the memorization ability becomes weaker. Surfing might take a lot longer than one thinks, and individuals may not even know it. This also leads to an increase in screen time so doom scrolling is becoming more and more ubiquitous these days. Therefore, individuals will not have enough time to spend on essential activities in one’s life like working or studying. In consequence, our quality and performance in surrounding people’s views will be degraded, especially by the academic and occupational results. Moreover, it has a negative effect on human’s memory, especially in children. We aren’t using our brains as much as we used to because of the rise of the Internet so our ability may become finite due to the limit individuals unconsciously create. When we were younger, we used to remember phone numbers, addresses, and PINs in our heads, as well as perform simple math without the aid of our phones. However, in this day and age, with the advent and development of the Internet, people depend mostly on storage applications which help people note down their personal information so they do not need to use our mind for memorizing. In the long term, we often have difficulty in learning by heart some of the knowledge that plays a vital role in our life of journey.
On the other hand, there is a school of thought that the Internet plays a crucial role in transferring information and enhancing daily life. Firstly, the Internet is effortless, convenient access to a wide range of information. Because individuals can stay updated instantly, they will not miss any hot news which is useful in their life. Compared to in the past, people only received news on significant affairs via mainstream media such as national broadcasting channels, but people have to wait for the correct time for hearing because they only stream at a fixed period of time so it is very inconvenient. Secondly, it also enhances the quality of life. With the birth of the Internet there are more choices in the way a person entertains himself or herself. Consequently, the chance of being stressed decreases due to relaxation.
In a nutshell, the Internet has many pros such as entertainment and providing people with on-going information all over the world. However it also has the cons always go hand in hand with the pros which is time wastage and reduces the cognitive ability in each person. From my perspective, people should use the Internet wisely and reasonably based on personal desire and work or study.
