A certain part of people believe that the internet has a negative effect on communities, making the world narrower by bonding people together. It is undeniable that the internet provides many opportunities for communication between individuals; such as social media or messengers, and fandoms or online communities, therefore I absolutely agree with the statement of the internet making it more convenient to reach out to each other, and disagree with that the world is smaller now than it used to be.
Firstly, before the invention of the internet, the most common way of engaging in a chat through great distances were the letters, however delivery of those letters took too much time to reach to a recipient, if they were living in a far-flung place because the terrain, through which the letter should’ve went, made a path arduous, therefore causing delays. By contrast, in a modern world, it only takes a second for a message to be delivered. Social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram and messaging applications (Telegram, Whatsapp) now grant people ability to connect with each other nevethless the distance of thousands of kilometres. Hence, the internet has made it possible to save a plenty of time by boosting the delivery of messages from one to another.
Secondly, humans are the creatures which are highly dependent on the society and tend to form groups of common interests with each other, and this pattern of behaviour is still present, even though it had appeared in the archaic periods. Until the technological breakthrough, which occurred in the end of 20th century , individuals could find other proponents of the same ideas only in a local region; whereas, after the breakthrough, they were able to connect to people who adhered common ideology arount the whole world, that means that there were even more proponents in touch, who could form huge cosmopolitan communities than earlier. Thus, the internet proved itself more useful in contrary to what some people said to believe about the internet.
In summary, the internet allowed people to communicate with each other, despite the kilometres separating them, via different applications; it granted certain groups to connect with other groups sharing similarities to form even bigger ones, making it much more easier to reach out to another person, therefore it is clear that the internet has not made the world tiny, but made it greater than it used to be.
