A number of individuals argues that the main reason for studying a foreign language is to be capable to travel or to work internationally. Some opinions states that there are more reasons why people should study an additional language. From my point of view, both of them are correct.
On one hand, some people decide to learn a new language because it is a requirement, whether the reason is for studying or working abroad. For instance, in order for me to study in Canada I need to pass the IELTS exam which requires me to learn English. Furthermore, another reason why they take initiative to study a certain language is because they want to visit a specific country, wherein, most of the public are not knowledgeable enough to speak English. Even though, English is a universal language and is mostly taught widely, there are still some who did not have this privilege. Therefore, it will be easier communicate if they know the basic words and common phrases that the people of that country use.
On the other hand, a few people developed a hobby of learning a variety of language and these individuals are known as a polyglot, these people are capable to speak and write multiple languages. Meanwhile, some individuals decided to study because it can offer a better opportunity in the future. Only a small proportion of the population can speak 2 or more languages therefore, this can be their selling point thus, resulting to competitive salary.
In conclusion, the purpose of studying other languages should not be arguable. We are all different individuals and our priorities may differ. Others learn it because they need to while some do it because they want to.
