Censorship of the internet has already been a large topic, involving not only basic human rights but, most importantly, our understanding of information itself. From my perspective, we cannot create a rule that would stop the government from further incorporating suppressing laws. Therefore, no one, including any kind of state, should have control over internet censorship. Let me elaborate on my opinion.
First of all, the internet has already become the main source of information for the majority of the population, surpassing television and radio. This is primarily due to its independence from any kind of controlling power, such as corporations or the government. Consequently, it certainly increases the amount of unsafe and potentially harmful content, making it substantially more dangerous. However, it also provides access to a vast range of vital information for people in need. Different definitions can also play a role: while some websites are relatively normal for Europeans, other cultures can unintentionally alter their meaning based on the customs and habits of a region.
Second of all, even if we choose the government to have some extent of control over web space, we need to pick a truly independent government willing to strictly follow the Declaration of Human Rights along with the principles of democracy. The potential threats of giving authoritarian or radical governments the power to erase and censor information exceed the benefits received from a safer internet.
Overall, I believe that while being a generally good idea, it fails to account for many drawbacks that can cause violations of basic human rights and the freedom of the internet itself.
