Band 8+: Some people say that there is too much harmful content on the internet. They say the only way to make the internet safe is for the government to censor the content of websites. To what extent do you think the government should control what information is available on the internet?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There have been instances over the years when individuals have claimed that the internet consists of harmful content. I agree that censoring the content of websites and channels is necessary in order to create a safe environment. However, I believe that controlling all the information provided through media platforms is not necessary.

With the rapid advancement in artificial intelligence and technology, cyberbullying and cyber crimes have become a prominent issue. Significant rise in adult content has led to increased exposure of inappropriate material to minors, raising serious concerns about online safety and digital well-being. Moreover, the ease of accessing such content has made it difficult for parents and educational institutions to monitor and regulate children’s online activities effectively. This situation has not only contributed to a decline in mental health among youth but has also fueled the spread of exploitative and illegal online behaviors.

Governments and technology companies must take proactive steps to combat these challenges. Strict regulations, improved content filtering systems, and digital literacy programs can play a pivotal role in safeguarding internet users. Additionally, fostering awareness among parents and educators about responsible internet usage is crucial in building a safer digital environment for all. Additionally, governments can raise awareness through advertisements and social media platforms on child- and teen-friendly internet practices, promoting safe browsing habits and encouraging the use of age-appropriate content filters.

In conclusion, to address these concerns, a joint effort by governments, technology companies, and families is essential. By promoting digital literacy, implementing stricter content regulations, and raising awareness through targeted campaigns, societies can create a safer and more responsible online environment for future generations.
