It is debatable whether completely food self-supply is required for a country. Some people believe that a country should reduce its import food at its most, while other oppose this viewpoint. In my opinion, increase food production domestically is essential, while import food is also critical in some circumstance.
There are several reasons why a country should avoid dependent solely on import food. Firstly, producing food in domestic can mitigate the potential impact from the import countries. For example, several European countries import grains from Ukraine. Since the war between Ukraine and Russel occurred, the price of grains in those import countries dramatically rise. Conversely, countries that grow plants and produce food domestically are less impacted by the war in food supplement. Not only could war affect the global food chain, but the geographic feature of one country also influence the significance of domestic food production. Take Pacific island countries as an example, the isolated geographical location of those countries increase the uncertainties on food provision from other countries.
However, food import is necessary if the natural environment in one country is unable to support the agricultural or other food industries as it need. For instance, it is barely possible to grow tropical fruits in areas in high latitude. Under this circumstance, countries can only dependent on the export from tropical countries. Another example is regarding the land scarcity. In detail, some developing countries are experiencing substantial population growth. To support those population, there are higher land need on living space, which may sacrifice the land being used for agriculture. Consequently, those countries may need the import food to satisfy the food requirement for all of their residents.
In conclusion, I partly agree that one country should increase its domestic food production. By producing food on its own, country can prevent the stable food supply from internationally uncertainties. In the meanwhile, I acknowledge that importing food is helpful to compensate the environmental limitations and land scarcities.
