It is said that the state should provide food self-sufficiency for its own residents and import as little as possible. I firmly disagree with this viewpoint. This essay will explore both perspectives before reaching a conclusion.
On the one hand, self-sufficiency not only creates environmental benefits but also provides economic stability. Specifically, importing food requires massive transportation, such as planes, trucks, vessels, and cars. Transporting food across long distances contributes to carbon emissions, which can cause several natural disasters. To illustrate, food delivery alone creates tons of emissions in developing countries. Producing food locally can help reduce the environmental impact. Moreover, manufacturing food domestically can maintain economic stability and reduce dependency on imports, which may be disrupted by political conflicts and global economic crises. In this way, the government can support farmers, peasants, and agricultural workers while also creating jobs. Additionally, spending money on domestic production and cultivation is more beneficial than allocating funds to imports. Last but not least, producing all the food for its residents has some benefits, such as leading to environmental advantages and financial independence.
On the other hand, there are several challenges to reducing imports. For instance, it can create problems for countries with unproductive soil or unsuitable climates for cultivating certain products. For example, many fruits grow only in tropical countries and cannot be cultivated in colder climates. Similarly, some halal goods might only be available in other states. Furthermore, importing food is a great way to foster international relationships with other nations. Importing food allows countries to improve global cooperation and overcome climate limitations.
Taking everything into account, there are various upsides and downsides to self-sufficiency. It reduces dependency on other nations and creates many environmental benefits, while also enhancing international relationships, which are crucial in today’s world, and removes climate restrictions.
