There has been a heated debate regarding whether researching into life on other planets or dealing with unsolved issues on Earth is more important to maintain human’s existence. Personally, I firmly believe that concentrating on tackling current issues on Earth is more crucial because of its habitable environment and accessibility for all people.
On the one hand, some argue that extensive space exploration for habitable planets might bring some benefits for human-being. Firstly, investing in research about other planet where there is a seed of life might point out the possible potential of creating a more favourable living environment, comparing to the existing one on Earth. This means that while Earth are suffering from countless detrimental impacts of climate change, a new planet is unspoilt, containing a number of unexploited resources. As a result, those challenges that we are currently facing perhaps will no longer plague humanity.
On the other hand, I believe that dedicating time and financial resources to tackling issues on Earth would be more feasible and pratical. To begin with, despite the immediate solution to current problems ranging from the deteriorating environment to resource depletion, life on new planet might still face the potential of being destroyed by human’s industrialization process. Therefore, unless people shoulder the responsibility and attempt to solve challenges on Earth, life could be once again pushed to the verge of destruction even on another planet. Furthermore, people might have to invest in producing cutting-edge techonologies to immigrate to another planets, which the cost is exorbitant. Thus, it would be inaccesible for everybody. On the other hand, in fact, there is not any planet that provides such habitable environment and resources as Earth. For instance, although they have found some possibility of lives on Mars, it would so hard to maintain a livable environment at enormous expense with a deep unlikelihood of being self-sustaining for centuries or thousands of years.
In conclusion, while it is understandable why some desire to expore life on other planet, I still believe that it is more effective and advantageous to work toward solutions for current problems on Earth.
