Some people argue that how we perceive someone at first impression is essential, whereas others assert that we should take time to get to know someone rather than judging at first hand. Although there are some valid points why the first impression is important, this essay will discuss why further time is needed to understand someone else completely.
On the one hand, some people say that first impression plays a pivotal role in all kinds of communications. This can be explained by the people’s tendency to guess what kind of person someone can be when they see each other for the first time, leading to better understanding. For example, giving an excellent first impression is undeniablely crucial in a job interview, where an interviewer can get an idea of the candidate’s character, according to their clothing styles, the way they speak, and the way they present themselves.
Others and I, on the other hand, contend that we need time to know someone completely. While it is true that first impressions can hint at one’s personality, people cannot get to know each other’s lives overnight. In other words, people need to take time to fully understand each other and share their life experiences, which in turn results in long-lasting relationships. Without a sufficient amount of time, individuals may struggle to rely on others, as they cannot trust them wholly. To illustrate, a study conducted by the Psychological Department at Oxford University found that participants considered their childhood friends to be the individuals who provided emotional support during their hardships, and they could trust them fully, as they gradually came to understand each other more over time.
In conclusion, while first impression is claimed to be a key in any form of relationships by some people, others and I hold the view that taking time is a fundamental determinant of building long-lasting bonds between people.
