In this day and age, economic progress has raised standards of living throughout the world. Often, this is the result of expansions of businesses, especially those that cross international waters. With this in mind, it is clear that society is benefiting because more people are studying business, which is practical, rather than non-practical subjects like history. In my opinion, contemporary society indeed has benefited greatly because of the value contributed by business majors.
First, it is important to acknowledge that technological development is facilitated because of successful business entrepreneurs. From the steam engine to the microchip to artificial intelligence, all of these things are possible because of the men and women who had the business acumen to create products and services that bring value to society. Indeed, businesspeople have brought positive, tangible results to our society.
On the other hand, while it is important to understand and know history, often, the true knowledge of history is hidden because historians are biased in the way the present historical events. Such biases do not allow us to truly learn from history. They write from their emotional perspectives or from their political dispositions, rather than telling the truth. For example, while some people called the war in Vietnam as “The Vietnam War”, others called this war as “The American War.” Who is right? How can we learn from history if the truth cannot be revealed?
In conclusion, rather than engaging in discourses about history that often end up in stalemates, it is better to focus on developing the economy through study programs such as the well-known MBA program or other degrees in business and markets.
