In the threshold of the new era, people think that it is very important to improve safety on the road when driving. Yet, when it comes to whether stricter punishment is the only way for drivers who break traffic rules, people hold divergent views. Insofar as I believe, other effective methods should be taken rather than punishment.
Granted, one would argue that it is reasonable to punish people who drive on the road illegally, such as giving fines or putting them in prison, when they are driving overspeed or drinking, as people will remind themselves to drive at a normal speed or not drink if they do not want to pay more fines or go to prison. Moreover, the government, which gets more money from the fines, can contribute to public transportation or road rebuilding. Therefore, both driving offenders as well as the public can benefit from this method.
Having said that, however, punishment is not the only way to improve safety on the road. Sometimes, stricter punishment cannot solve the main problems from the root rather than bringing about more serious social issues, such as spending more money and workforce on the management in prison.
Therefore, in my opinion, there are numerous effective methods in a friendly way to tackle this safety issue. For example, installing cameras to remind drivers in busy traffic areas can help people to keep their speed, avoiding traffic accidents. If they have been drinking wine after taking part in a party, they can choose to take a taxi or bus instead of driving their car. These ways can encourage them to do the right things, but not just stricter punishments that make them feel more pressure when they are driving.
Based on all the arguments offered above, while stricter punishment may bring about positive results, by no means should we ignore the fact that more effective methods in a friendly way can also help people to improve safety on the road.
