These days, there are many suggestions being made to the study program for students. Some believe that the science and preparation of food should be added in courses, while others insist on giving priority to more important subjects. In this essay, both points of view will be discussed.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that students can get various benefits from studying the science of food. Firstly, learning food science allows students to acquire an in-depth knowledge of food components, which could encourage them to have a better eating habit. Because when students know how food constituents such as fats, proteins and minerals affect their physical health condition, they may become more willing to adopt a healthy and balanced diet instead of pre-prepared meals. Additionally, researching on preparation methods would provide learners with benefits for their future career. In fact, many recruiters from food companies tend to favor candidates who have understanding of not only food science but also the proper way of treating food over those who do not.
On the other hand, there are several reasons why argue that students should dedicate their time to other subjects that are more important. First of all, it is true that there is a huge number of students regard food science as a side (minor) subject, resulting in a consequence that their engagement is frequently at a minimum, and therefore, the subject’s applicability will be limited. Furthermore, building kitchens for student-use would put a financial burden on schools since they have to spend a lot of money on contributing new infrastructure and preparing equipment as well as ingredients required to teach. This means that students, who would like to take this course, may have to pay more expensive tuition fee.
In conclusion, although food science could bring certain values to students, I personally think that it would be better for students to devote mainly their time to core subjects.
