There are different views regarding the impact of technological progress on crime, with the one school of thought claiming that it reduces crime. Others, however, argue that it is rather detrimental than advantageous. While I acknowledge significant benefits of technological advancement, I strongly believe that technological progress stimulates crime.
Admittedly, technological advances are really helpful in terms of crime mitigation. One of the main reasons is that technological advancements equip law enforcement agencies with advanced tools that substantially improve crime prevention and detection capabilities. For example, DNA databases have played a crucial role in solving numerous cold cases, as genetic genealogy has recently made it possible to identify offenders many years after their crimes by means of sophisticated matching methods. Moreover, the use of surveillance cameras with facial recognition technology has considerably contributed to the detection of serious criminal offenses.
Despite this arguments, I remain convinced that modern technology has contributed to the development of new criminal activities that threaten individuals and institutions across the world. To begin with, cybercriminals steal billions of dollars each year through identity theft, ransomware attacks, and online scam, affecting millions of victims. Additionally, social media platforms have contributed to the rise of cyberbullying, online predation, and terrorist recruitment, whereas cryptocurrencies have made money laundering and drug trafficking increasingly widespread. The global nature of digital crime enables offenders to target victims across international borders while remaining largely beyond the reach of traditional law enforcement.
In summary, although the crucial role of technological improvements in tackling crime cannot be overlooked, I maintain that it encourages people to commit crime.
