Some people argue that long term incarceration can reduce crime, while others support various solutions. In my opinion alternative approaches are recommended.
Firstly, long term imprisonment enhances the deterrence of crime and make these criminals not to reoffend the law. Secondly, if minor criminals are sentenced for long term there are more likely chance that they will break the law again. For instance, a thief is sentenced with long imprisonment, there are chances that when he will be released, he will commit the same crime again. Finally, if murderers are released early, they will pose a serious threat to the society. These murders can kill innocent people and reoffend law.
On the other hand, jails have quotas reserved and limited space. If jails are with full of criminals there will be no space left for new criminals. In addition, for rehabilitation and education purpose more staff is required. As it is not possible for the limited staff to pay attention on every criminal. Moreover, if there is no rehabilitation and education system to develop personality of young people, there will be more criminal minds in society and crime rate will increase.
In conclusion, I agree that long imprisonment can reduce crime rate in society by deterring offenders and protecting the public. I believe this is not the only solution more efforts are required. There must be rehabilitation centers in jail with special emphasis on building characters for society. A combination of strict punishment and rehabilitation along with addressing social issues will have more impact on criminals.
