Environmental issues have increasingly become a focal point of concern on a global scale, necessitating effective strategies to ensure a sustainable future. While some individuals argue that these challenges should be addressed primarily by government entities, others contend that individuals also play a critical role in confronting these environmental dilemmas. From my perspective, I firmly advocate for the latter viewpoint, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility.

Proponents of government intervention argue that it is the responsibility of state authorities to tackle current environmental issues. One rationale for this belief is that governments can attract investments and high-quality human resources from international partners. For instance, Vietnam has successfully engaged in comprehensive regional and global cooperation agreements, securing preferential loans and aid from sources such as foreign direct investment (FDI) and official development assistance (ODA). Moreover, the government’s collaboration with relevant agencies enables it to promote awareness campaigns regarding environmental protection, often in conjunction with international organizations. These initiatives encourage businesses to adopt advanced technologies, thereby enhancing production efficiency and reducing ecological footprints. A notable example of this is Vietnam’s FDI, which reached nearly 22.4 billion USD in 2022—a 13.5% increase from the previous year—underscoring the potential of well-executed government policies in combating environmental degradation. Furthermore, substantial financial inflows, amounting to over 90 billion USD from various countries and international entities since 1993, have significantly bolstered Vietnam’s economic and social development, contributing to efforts in hunger alleviation and poverty reduction. Additionally, multinational corporations such as Samsung have established research and development centers in Ho Chi Minh City, bringing sizable investment that promotes sustainable industrial practices.

Conversely, I maintain that individual actions are equally crucial in addressing environmental concerns. Individuals can express their environmental anxieties to government authorities, thereby urging them to implement and enforce effective policy measures. This can be achieved through various avenues, such as submitting complaints to local governing bodies about environmentally harmful practices. Furthermore, authorities often encourage public engagement in green initiatives, which serve to elevate awareness surrounding contemporary environmental challenges. For example, citizens can file petitions with local governments upon witnessing factories releasing untreated wastewater or other detrimental activities affecting their surroundings. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to volunteer for international environmental projects, such as WildAct, WWF Vietnam, and Let’s Do It!, which not only fosters community involvement but also amplifies collective efforts toward sustainable practice.

In conclusion, while there is a compelling argument for both governmental and individual actions in addressing environmental challenges, it is evident that collaboration between the two is vital. Global cooperation facilitates the exchange of knowledge and resources, while individual contributions can lead to targeted solutions that address specific local needs. By harmonizing efforts at both the governmental and individual levels, we can create a sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
