A group of people hold a view that a comeback of the capital punishment will make our lives safer. I completely oppose this statement. Implementing the death penalty could conversly become the preferred punishment for serious offenders, failing to deter crime and thereby failing to ensure a safer society.
Firstly, in most cases, regardless of the type of crime, the death penalty can be considered the best penalty by some lawbreakers. Because usually this penalty is given to someone who has committed a severe crime, and those people risk everything, even their lives and may think they have nothing to lose. Thus, they prefer death since it offers a quick end, wheras victims of their crimes and their families endure long-lasting suffering. However, only a few people would choose life imprisonment and spend their rest of life in prison. Thereby, the number of crimes can increase if the death penalty is brought back.
Another compelling argument is that death penalty can cause injustice in society. There have been many cases where innocent people have been imprisoned, and after years, their innocence has been proved. I cannot imagine what would happen if those people had been subjected to the death penalty and after some time it appeared that they were not guilty.It could be the biggest injustice in the world. How can life be safe if innocent people die and criminals are walking among us? Even the phrases ‘death penalty’ and ‘safe life’ contradict each other. That is why the death penalty is never the right solution to prevent crimes and promote a safe life.
In conclusion, I entirely oppose the idea of restoring the death penalty. Rather than being a comfortable solution for criminals, it can also promote injustice in society by exposing death penalty to blameless people.
