Band 5+: Some people think that foreign films have a negative impact on local culture. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It’s sometimes thought that foreign films affect local culture negatively and it has persistently been a debate among individuals. Despite that both sides can offer valid reasons that support each side, I completely belong to a group that agrees to this notion. In the upcoming paragraphs I shall further my opinion at this point.

On the one side of the coin, there is a huge plethora of rational reasons to agree with the statement. First and foremost, famous movies that underline the culture of 1 separated country foster to a cultural homogenization across the globe. In other words, some films can offer certain lifestyles, social norms or values that may differ from local traditions. As a result, local culture may be diminished as the consequence of foreign films that attract local dwellers more than local ones. Moreover, foreign films can easily overshadow locally made ones. As a consequence, this can lead to reduced financial support for local film producing industries. And finally the amount of locally produced films with cultural heritage will decrease as the time goes on.

On the other flip side of the coin, there are also some arguments maintaining the paradoxical side. First of all, films all over the world can act as a source of new ideas to attract more local dwellers to watch movies. In spite of ideas, foreign films also may act as a state of motivation for local filmmakers. Witnessing the income of the most successful filmmakers, locals can also get interested in this industry, which fosters to a burgeoning effect of movies’ amount and movies containing cultural heritage as well. Therefore, global awareness of a certain country will rise as the amount of local films does.

All in all, when all the specific reasons and relevant instances are considered and evaluated, I strongly agree with the notion that increasing amounts of foreign films is detrimental to a local culture since the vast majority of foreign film viewers is teenagers and kids that are easy to get impressed and obsessed with values and norms that are depicted on foreign movies and they can forget about local culture.
