Some people believe that medical services are essential in modern society and healthcare should be beneficial for people, not for companies, while others argue that it creates serious issues for society. Despite the fact that medical services have some problems, I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because every person must have access to healthcare, regardless of their income.
On the one hand, equal access to medical services may lead to a healthier population. Doctors can diagnose diseases much earlier and, as a result, the mortality rate will decrease. For instance, in poor regions there are serious illnesses and people cannot afford healthcare. In addition, if healthcare decisions are based on the patients’ needs, rather than profit, all people may receive medical treatment. Moreover, free medical support may improve productivity in the workforce. Good health increases productivity because healthier people can work and study more effectively. As an illustration, healthy workers can complete more tasks due to their energy and students may achieve better academic marks.
On the other hand, due to the long waiting times in hospitals, not all patients can receive medical treatment when necessary. If treatment is delayed, the consequences of the disease become more serious. For instance, patients who need urgent surgery may suffer pain every day while waiting for medical help. Furthermore, limited funding in hospitals may prevent investment in healthcare, which means that equipment in medical centres may not be updated. As an illustration, modern equipment in hospitals allows doctors to obtain more precise medical information about a patient’s health condition.
To sum up, I strongly believe that the advantages of a non-profit healthcare system outweigh the disadvantages because people are not forced to choose between their health and financial situation.
