Many people claim that the government should subsidize fruits and vegetables to make healthy food cheaper, while others believe that the government should tax unhealthy food instead. Subsidizing foods such as fruits and vegetables might increase the consumer opportunity to buying them and taxing unhealthy food like fast food might decrease the number of fast food consumption. In my opinion, both views are straightforward and might result more people consume healthy food.
More people might buy fruits and vegetables if governments subsidize such items. This is because fruits and vegetables are considering as expensive goods. It is true that most of fruits and vegetables are expensive because it took long time to harvest them. Not only about the harvesting time but the cost of distributing the goods also expensive. That is why the fruits and vegetables are expensive in many places. People claim that the government can overcome this problem by subsidizing fruits and vegetables price in order to increase the buying level of the goods. For instance, Japan have been subsidizing fruits and vegetables for many years. This result to more people buying and consuming fruits and vegetables as healthy food. I believe this kind of action can be imitate by other countries to make healthy food especially fruits and vegetables more affordable.
Taxing unhealthy food can be an alternative to decrease its consumption. As it happen in majority countries, more and more people are consuming unhealthy food especially junk food. This is common phenomenon since fast food like burger, hot-dog, and pizza are taking least time to cook. Not only it fast to cook but also it is cheap. That’s why many people prefer to consume fast foods. One solution to solve this problem is to tax unhealthy food. It can lead to the increasing price of fast food and decreasing number of its consumer. This action have happened in Swiss, the government taxing unhealthy food such as pizza and burger. It leads to the increasing price of unhealthy food. Resulting on least people afford such unhealthy foods. In my perspective, this action is easy to follow by others governments that face similar problem.
In conclusion, subsidizing healthy food such as fruits and vegetables might increase its consumer and taxing unhealthy food such as fast food can decrease its consumption.
