Teaching languages in small classes is more advantageous, in some people’s opinion, while others believe that the class size is unimportant. From my point of view, I lean more toward the former statement.
On the one hand, there are two main reasons that make small classes more effective for teaching foreign languages. Firstly, smaller class sizes tend to increase lesson productivity. When there are fewer students, teachers can devote more attention to each pupil’s learning needs. This allows them to focus on their students more effectively, provide timely feedback, and review assignments with greater care. For example, in Vietnam, most IELTS classes consist of fewer than ten learners, enabling more efficient learning progress compared to larger groups of fifty. Additionally, small classes create a more tranquil environment. With fewer students, there are fewer distractions and noises, such as loud discussions among peers. This can negatively impact learning outcomes, as seen in some public school English classes that struggle due to overcrowding.
On the other hand, there are valid arguments suggesting that class size does not necessarily hinder language learning. For one, larger classrooms allow many students to learn simultaneously, creating valuable collective learning experiences. In a bigger course setting, students have the chance to learn from their peers and improve their communication and social skills through group activities and discussion exchanges. Moreover, the qualifications and teaching methods of the instructor are critical factors in a student’s academic performance. A teacher’s ability to convey knowledge and motivate students plays a significant role in their success. In many cases, the teacher’s effectiveness can greatly influence student outcomes.
In conclusion, while having access to instruction for many individuals may seem beneficial, class size is still a crucial factor in achieving successful results. Small classes play an important role in language learning, as they engage students and facilitate efficient information acquisition.
