Band 7+: Some people think that physical strength is important for success in sport, while other people think that mental strength is more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The factors contributing to performance in sports are continually investigated by sport scientists and athletes. While several individuals claim that success in sports is derived from physical strength, other people believe that mental strength is the key. Both sides of this debate obtain their own merits, which are worth examining before reaching any conclusion.

On the one hand, it is justifiable for some people to argue that mental strength plays an important role for sporting success. One of the most striking signs is that it provides invisible motivation for athletes. To be more specific, the essence of sports is repeated and continuous training, which can easily lead to boredom and demotivation if athletes cannot be supported by an unwavering spirit as well as a win-at-all-cost attitude. As a result, the training may not yield high-level results and effective performance. Furthermore, in any sport, there will be disappointments and failures, it is essential to be mentally strong to overcome these difficulties and achieve the goals.

On the other hand, there are numerous worth-analyzing reasons to believe that physical strength is the fundamental to the success in various sports. Particularly, sports require the athletes to have excellent physical conditioning with high levels of endurance, due to a high demand in training and competition schedules. For instance, in some sports such as running, swimming and football, the ability to maintain endurance is crucial which is largely derived from physical strength. Without a strong base of physical health and fitness, it would be challenging for athletes to achieve top-level performance and results in any sport competitions.

Taking all into consideration, both physical and mental strength are necessary to become successful in sports. While mental strength provides motivation and resilience, physical strength is essential for endurance and optimal performance. From my perspective, I believe that it is impossible to succeed without being physically strong.
